What are the five food groups?
The key to a healthy diet is to consume a variety of nutritious food which is where the five food groups come into it. The five food groups are:
1. Fruits/ vegetables and legumes and beans. 2. Lean meats/ poultry and meat alternatives including fish, eggs, tofu, nut and seeds and legumes/beans. 3. Grains and cereal food such as breads, rice, potatoes and pasta. 4. Milk and dairy products. 5. Foods containing fat and foods containing sugar. How many servings of them should I have a day?Well here's the thing, there is a right amount of calories your body should consume depending on your age, physical activity and whether you want to lose, gain or maintain your weight. So I guess there is no real answer but the average adult person should approximately consume 5 serving of Fruits/ vegetables and legumes and beans daily, 3-6 servings of Lean meats/ poultry and meat alternatives including fish, eggs, tofu, nut and seeds and legumes/beans daily, 6 serving of Grains and cereal food such as breads, rice, potatoes and pasta daily, 2-3 serves of milk and dairy products daily and 2 servings of Foods containing fat and 0-1 servings of foods containing sugar per week.
What makes a serve?
A serve is made up of all of the food that you are going to consume but that serve varies between different foods. the standard serve of fruits and vegetables is approximately 75 grams of vegetables and 150 grams of fruit, a standard serve of lean meat and meat alternatives is approximately 57 grams of meat and then 1/2 a cup of beans, a standard serve for grains and cereal food is approximately 500KJ, the standard serve for milk and dairy products is approximately 500-600KJ and a standard serve of food that contains fat and sugar is approximately 10 grams.
